Luren, 1958-1967

  • 1958-1962: A. Richard Roby, vocal director of Decorah High School, leads Luren, serving also as Associate director-in-Chief at the 1962 NSAA Sangerfest.
  • 1959: Luren hosts the 8th Sangerfest in Decorah. Nine choruses from Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin participate.
  • 1961: The Northwest Singers Association gathers in Grand Forks for Sangerfest, with choruses from North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Canada (Winnipeg).
  • 1962: Willard Linnevold of Decorah takes up the baton for one year.
  • 1962-1967: Wesley Abbott of the voice faculty of Luther College directs Luren.
  • 1962: Luren sings in the Mormon Tabernacle and participates in the NSAA Sangerfest in Salt Lake City, UT.
  • 1963: Luren Singers are guests at a biennial Sangerfest of the Sioux Valley Singers Association in Sioux City, IA.
  • 1964: An East Coast Tour includes concerts in Ohio and at the New York World’s Fair, a two-day visit to Washington, D.C. and participation in the National Sangerfest in New York City.
  • 1965: Crown Prince Harald of Norway visits Decorah on October 6th. Luren sings for him in front of Vesterheim.
  • 1966: A first in Decorah, as Luren hosts the National Sangerfest for three days, June 16-18. Previous National Sangerfests (which Luren attended) have been hosted by Salt Lake City and New York City. 28 choruses, 500 singers, plus wives, friends, guest and spectators. Planning for the event began two years in advance. Luren Director Wesley Abbott is soloist. The event is an unqualified success! Luren membership stands at 57.
  • 1967-1975: David Greedy, professor of music at Luther College, takes up the baton as director of Luren. His first event is the annual Christmas Concert of 1967 in the Decorah Junior High School Auditorium.
